Operation Sindoor was launched by the Indian Armed Forces on May 6, 2025, marking a significant military action in the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan. This operation involved a series of air and missile strikes aimed at terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The operation was named after a traditional red powder used in Hindu rituals, symbolizing both focus and intensity.
Background of Operation Sindoor
The operation came in response to an attack on Hindu tourists in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, on April 22, 2025, which left 26 people dead. Indian authorities have blamed Pakistan-based militant groups, such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, for orchestrating the attack. These groups have historically been involved in cross-border terrorism and have carried out several high-profile attacks in India.
India’s military targeted nine sites across Pakistan, including militant training camps and weapons caches that are believed to be connected to these groups. The Indian government has described the airstrikes as focused, measured, and non-escalatory, with the objective of dismantling terrorist networks while avoiding broader conflict with Pakistan.

Pakistan Response To India Strikes
The operation was carried out using Rafale fighter jets armed with SCALP missiles and AASM Hammer bombs, with the strikes completed in just 23 minutes. The targets included facilities in Bhimber, Muzaffarabad, and other areas of Pakistan-administered Kashmir. India emphasized that these sites were specifically chosen for their links to militant operations and that no Pakistani military targets were involved in the attack.
India’s Ministry of Defence confirmed the success of the strikes and claimed that these actions were aimed at dismantling the infrastructure responsible for planning and carrying out the deadly attack in Pahalgam.
Pakistan’s Reaction
In the aftermath, Pakistan condemned the strikes as an “act of war” and vowed to retaliate. Pakistan’s military claimed to have downed five Indian fighter jets, a statement that has not been confirmed by India. The situation remains highly volatile, with both countries engaging in military posturing and threatening further escalation.
